  Morality is a social construct (an “imagined reality”) that sprung from the human imagination and has remained in existence because we find the concept to be useful. Morality is useful because it helps to achieve social cohesion by providing the framework that enables us to live and work together in flexibly cooperative societies. Without morality, civilization would devolve into chaos because there would be nothing to compel us to fulfill our obligations to society. Without a moral framework to guide us, many would become free riders who take advantage of the fruits of civilization without adding sufficient value in return. Many more would be driven to act upon unrestrained ambition, negligent opportunism, self-serving exploitation, and rogue justice.
